The idea to start your own website is quite exciting for anyone. This is an excellent channel to express yourself in many ways. It doesn’t cost much to have a website of your own and it’s a lot easier now than it was ten years ago. Hope the tips mentioned below will help you in more ways than one.

Disclaimer: I would like to state that tips mentioned in these articles are for people who are looking to start a website with the intention to attract traffic to their site. If you intend to start a site/ blog for personal use then some steps might not be relevant to you. I hope these articles will help you learn and understand how to get good search engine results for your website.

What is your website all about?
You need to come up with a core theme for your site in this case I absolutely enjoy cooking so I am going to use ‘Cooking’ as a base. I have come up with some nice recipes of my own, some inherited and some from friends and family. The plan is to start a website with all these special recipes that I have collected over the years. I am using this as an example but the methods are still relevant in whatever website you plan.
What do I need to do next?
Keywords

Google, Yahoo, Bing are the biggest players in the search engine market. The chances of people visiting your website through these search engines are very high.

Firstly, you would need to familiarise yourself with the Google keyword tool .Why? Because this gives you an idea of what keywords people are searching for on the internet. It gives you an insight into traffic, usage, cost etc of all keywords. So let me go ahead and search for the keyword ‘recipes’ and the result should somewhat look like this.

google tool

You can see that the keywords which have a lot of traffic globally are Recipes, recipe, chicken recipes, easy recipes, food recipes, cake recipes, cooking recipes and healthy recipes. These are the keywords that users search to reach ‘recipes’ related websites and this is exactly what we are interested in. Similarly I look for ‘cooking’ ‘cooking food’ ‘easy cooking’ etc and with the data gathered I have come up with these keywords. You just need to search for words that make common sense and pick those with the highest traffic.

Since our example is about home cooking, cooking and recipes, I will focus on these keywords across my website.

I have keywords should I register a domain?

Most people come up with whacky names for their websites which have no relation with it’s content. These sites do get searched once they have a good page rank which takes a long time to get. Doing a Keywords analysis before registering a domain name helps a lot, especially for new web site and gets page ranked faster.

Choosing a domain name is a tricky one, 8 out of 10 times you might not find the name you thought of. Practically most of the English dictionary words are already registered domains. So should you think of another name without your keywords?  NO! You can use ( -,_,numbers)  I thought of using HomeCookingRecipes.com but as I guessed ,it was not available so I’ll be using Home-Cooking-Recipes.com.

You can use sites like nameboy.com that has an excellent tool for generating domain names which you might like. Since I have already decided the domain name, I can register with any name registering website. Which site to choose from is totally up to you, but please make sure you read the reviews of the site before making any purchases. I personally use namecheap.com as they have excellent pricing and is a hassle free website.

This is a series of articles which I’ll be posting over the next few days with more information.
